Julius Werner Chromecek and Daniela Zeilinger, in collaboration with guest curator Bastian Hackl-Schwind, present works that address the translation of materiality and surfaces within photography.
In Julius Werner Chromecek's series "Raster," analog and digital techniques are combined to reduce patterns and structures from the everyday environment to graphic grids. The result is photograms in which forms and surfaces are brought into focus, and the photographed objects are removed from their original context. A similar approach is taken in Daniela Zeilinger's series "Stardust." In her photograms of screen prints on glass, colored foils, typically used in studio photography and film, are stripped of their color and transformed into abstract light-dark contrasts. According to Zeilinger, the series "addresses the abstraction of colored light as chiaroscuro, transformed in several stages into traces of grid, grain, and dust." Bastian Hackl-Schwind also focuses on a process of transformation in his series "traces of work." He shows photographs of cutting materials from his workshop, which document his work process and thus addresses, on the one hand, the concept of work in art production, and on the other hand, the translation of material into photography.
What all the works have in common is the question of how material, surface and structure behave during photographic translation processes and what new properties and perspectives emerge through this transformation.
